Nigel by Spode
The Nigel pattern was produced in many versions. Several different colorways were used over the years. The earliest recorded is an underglaze version which was produced around 1829 on the Flower Embossed shape. A series of the pattern, introduced in 1906, in different colors featured a dagger bead design borders. This version is printed in claret brown and hand-colored underglaze. Following this are several other color variations of the pattern, including one where the bead pattern at the edge is in a diamond pattern. It would seem that even with slight variations to the design the patterns were still referred to as Nigel. Two popular versions of Nigel more generally available were introduced around 1913.
Naran or New Nigel is almost identical and has led to confusion of the patterns over the years especially when New was occasionally dropped from New Nigel. Like Nigel, Naran was also produced in different colors and on different bodies in many versions. Naran has a slightly different inner bead, or nankin, and has a different bead pattern at the border from Nigel.

Please Note: Not all Spode is safe for use in the microwave. Patterns with gold or platinum decorations around the rim should not be used in your microwave because microwaves can not pass through metal. If in doubt, use this simple test: Is this Utensil Safe for the Microwave?
