Portland Vase by Spode
The Portland Vase pattern was first introduced in 1832. The unusual design of the border demands great skill of the transferrer if unsightly joins are to be avoided. The original fine blue glass vase with carved cameo decoration was bought by Sir William Hamilton for £1000 from James Byres, who had bought it from the Princess Barberini. The vase was probably made by Greek craftsmen in Alexandria in about 60 BC. Sir William Hamilton sold it to the Duchess of Portland in 1784. Following her death in 1785, the Duke of Portland bought it at the auction of her effects in 1786. In 1845 while on loan from the Duke of Portland and on display at the British Museum it was smashed by William Lloyd who was inebriated.
The pattern has been produced in various versions. The pattern has also been known by the alternative name Grecian. Portland Vase was discontinued in 1940 and then reintroduced as one of the Victorian Dresser Plates in the Blue Room collection.
Spode Portland Vase is no longer produced. Versions of this pattern that are trimmed with gold are not safe for use in the microwave. If you need replacement or additional pieces for your collection of Spode Portland Vase, monitor this page on a weekly basis for new listings.

When it comes to finding Spode that is difficult to find in stores near you, one of your best resources for acquiring the items you want are sites like Amazon, Etsy, Replacements and eBay, where there are a lot of wonderful finds still in the original boxes. We all receive those odd items as gifts that we have no need for and never use. Yet, one person's junk could be exactly the treasure you want.
Please Note: Not all Spode is safe for use in the microwave. Patterns with gold or platinum decorations around the rim should not be used in your microwave because microwaves can not pass through metal. If in doubt, use this simple test: Is this Utensil Safe for the Microwave?
