Spode
Shanghai by Spode

Shanghai by Spode

Shanghai was introduced in the early 1900s and was produced in a least seventeen different versions. The most well known was produced on Hamburg shape. The pattern features Prunus blossoms (a genus of trees and shrubs, including plums, cherries, peaches, apricots and almonds) which is symbolic of the coming of Spring. In some versions the blossom covers the whole plate while others have a central spray and a border in the same design. There are also versions featuring the spray of blossom with birds and butterflies. The pattern has a printed outline which was then handcolored with raised enamels of many different colors. The pattern was produced on china, earthenware, stone china and as a pattern for toilet ware on ewers, basins, soap dishes and toothbrush boxes. The pattern was also known as Summer Blossom and Chinese Blossom.

Spode Shanghai is no longer being produced. Versions of this pattern that are trimmed with gold are not safe for use in the microwave. If you need replacement or additional pieces for your collection of Spode Shanghai, monitor this page on a weekly basis for new listings.

When it comes to finding Spode that is difficult to find in stores near you, one of your best resources for acquiring the items you want are sites like Amazon, Etsy, Replacements and eBay, where there are a lot of wonderful finds still in the original boxes. We all receive those odd items as gifts that we have no need for and never use. Yet, one person's junk could be exactly the treasure you want.

Please Note: Not all Spode is safe for use in the microwave. Patterns with gold or platinum decorations around the rim should not be used in your microwave because microwaves can not pass through metal. If in doubt, use this simple test: Is this Utensil Safe for the Microwave?

I am thrilled! There are many more recipes then I expected. I am very excited since my husband often works late and I end up with sandwiches rather then making myself something to eat.. —Barbara Andersen, New York
