Vienna Bird by Spode
Vienna Bird features an exotic almost imaginary bird rather than a real bird and is regarded as a traditional style of design. Produced in many different versions at Spode, sometimes the variation would be that the pattern was on a different shape or finished in a different way. One of the well-known versions was introduced in 1938 and features a range of exotic birds as subjects for the centres with a border of festoons and flowers. The pattern was printed and then handpainted. The design for this version was by one of Spode's famous artists, J. Arrowsmith. This version was retired in 1963.
Another popular Vienna Bird pattern was introduced in 1924. Printed in pink and produced on Gadroon shape, it had the addition of a pink verge line. This version was particularly popular in North America.
The different names for the same pattern can be confusing for collectors and historians. The Vienna Bird name was also used for different patterns which featured bird subjects.
Spode Vienna Bird is no longer produced. Versions of this pattern that are trimmed with gold are not safe for use in the microwave. If you need replacement or additional pieces for your collection of Spode Vienna Bird, monitor this page on a weekly basis for new listings.

When it comes to finding Spode that is difficult to find in stores near you, one of your best resources for acquiring the items you want are sites like Amazon, Etsy, Replacements and eBay, where there are a lot of wonderful finds still in the original boxes. We all receive those odd items as gifts that we have no need for and never use. Yet, one person's junk could be exactly the treasure you want.
Please Note: Not all Spode is safe for use in the microwave. Patterns with gold or platinum decorations around the rim should not be used in your microwave because microwaves can not pass through metal. If in doubt, use this simple test: Is this Utensil Safe for the Microwave?
