Villeroy & Boch Samarkand
Samarkand is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the world. Strategically located on the Silk Road, the first global trade route for more than 1,000 years, a hub of world trade and a melting pot of cultures from Europe to China, the trading metropolis experienced its heyday in the 14th Century. Its spectacular architecture, stunning artisan crafts, shimmering silks with elegant patterns and geometric ornamentation fascinated Europeans and exciting new luxuries came into European tradition.
Inspired by this thrilling mix of cultures, Villeroy & Boch picked up on elements from Oriental folklore for its Samarkand collection and, with an eye to home-grown tradition, interpreted it in a timeless and very noble way. A fine, delicate design has been applied to the round shapes from the Anmut collection with roots in the 1950s. The result is a surprising combination of the trusted with the new, conscious echoes of retro in a form displaying classic values and durability, and all this enlivened by a contemporary decoration reminiscent of the Oriental. In it, the versatile, geometric elements of the design are embedded into tranquil bands and chains and thus have the effect of a classic bordering that gives the dishware a demonstratively harmonious radiance. Each piece has its own combination of subtle stair-step and checkered bordering arranged on soft beige. The coloring, kept in warm nuances of white, ivory and sand, accentuated with gold, underscores the timeless elegance of Samarkand.
The concept behind Samarkand is based on authenticity and emotionality and makes both subtly classic and highly exotic table compositions possible. The additional Mosaic design, offered for dinner and salad plates, deepens the Oriental character of the set: A variety of bordering is melded together into a flag design with an airy effect. Particularly expressive in their design, the coordinating salad plates and after dinner cup and saucers that come in four different variations: Aquamarine, Cobalt Blue, Mandarin, and Rubin. Depending on the shading, they either enliven the calm baseline with either a rather cool, warm or powerful note, or they underscore, as a colorful solitary piece, their Oriental character. And a special show-stopper: All designs can be mixed and matched, even with Anmut, with Samarkand giving the entire table-setting an unmistakable radiance. While not suitable for the microwave because of the gold accents, Samarkand does go safely into the dishwasher.
